Do GPS Trackers Work Without Cell Service? What Actually Needs a Signal

It is a fair question, and the answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no — because a GPS tracker actually relies on two completely separate technologies that are easy to mix up. GPS and cell service are two different things

GPS is a positioning system. A tracker listens to signals from satellites overhead to calculate where it is — and that part does not depend on any cell network at all. Cellular service is a communication system: it is how the tracker sends that location to your phone or app. So a tracker does two jobs. First it figures out where it is (GPS, satellite-based). What happens when there is no cell signal

How to choose for low-coverage areas

If the places that matter to you have spotty service, prioritize a few things. Look for a device on a strong, broadly-covered cellular network, since not all trackers use the same carriers. Confirm that it logs and later syncs positions recorded while offline, so a dead zone becomes a delay rather than a hole. And think about how you will actually use the alerts: a tracker that stays quiet in coverage and simply catches you up after a gap is more useful than one that floods you with "lost signal" warnings every time a car enters a parking garage.
